In Chiapas territory, the Maya were established and founded major cities. From the decline of this great culture, cities were abandoned and violent chiapas Indians seized the territory; subjugating other pre-Hispanic civilizations in the region as the Zoques, Mames and Tzeltal.
In the sixteenth century, the Spanish Diego de Mazariegos established the Villa Real de Chiapas, today San Cristobal de las Casas, in honor of the bishop of Chiapas, Fray Bartolomé de las Casas, who in 1945 set out in this town to fight tirelessly for the indigenous rights
The evangelizers Dominicans settled here in 1935 and began to build convents, educate and establish indigenous villages. In 1949 declaring the abolition of slavery and servitude without pay of Chiapas.

During the war of independence Mexican Chiapas is not participating. San Cristobal was the capital of Chiapas territory but in 1892, the governor Emilio Rabasa change the seat of state power to Tuxtla Gutierrez.

Social inequality that has pursued this territory since its inception this continues, and in 1994 proclaimed the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) rose in arms from the depths of the jungle of Chiapas to protest the injustices of those people Indians are the object and claim the autonomy of their communities.
