Located 50 km. south of Yaxchilan, near the border with Guatemala, it is difficult to reach. The nearest major town is Palenque, located at 140 km.
Bonampak is famous for the frescoes were found intact in the Temple of the Murals.
The city of Bonampak was a dependency of the city of Yaxchilan and peaked between 500 and 800 AD.
The reason for their decline is unknown but the city was lost in the jungle for centuries. It was discovered by photographer Giles Healy in 1946 when he was documenting the life of the local Indians.
