Located 50 km. at south of Yaxchilán, near the border with Guatemala, it is difficult to get there. The nearest major city is Palenque, which is 140 km.
Bonampak is famous for the frescoes that were found intact in the temple of Murals.
The city of Bonampak was a unit of the city of Yaxchilan and reached its peak between the years 500 and 800 AD.
The reason for its decline is unknown but the city was lost in the jungle for centuries. It was discovered by photographer Giles Healy in 1946 when he was documenting the life of the Indians there.
